How Seinfeld Predicted The Strange Popularity Of Curling
- It's not intrinsically exciting.
- America has no hope of a medal.
- No one you know plays it (and you probably haven't either).
Your first reaction to curling was probably one of misunderstanding, or ridicule. Let's face it, it's an easy sport to make fun of. But as you see those guys (or girls) furiously sweeping the ice in front of that granite stone - you can't help watching. Yes, sweeping is actually an Olympic sport and as the ratings will show, it's one of our favourites here in the US. The marketing lesson here is simple: Sometimes being sillier than anything else can actually make you the most memorable (and successful). Need more proof? Just look at the success of the Snuggy.

Sort of like a car accident. Also there is the curiosity factor at play here.
Most sports at the Winter Olympics are pretty self explanatory.
Except curling.
What the heck is going on?
Next thing you know you are watch and telling others...odd eh?

i'd say it is all about curiosity, and afterwards, when you get the hang of it, the egocentrism of being the only one to know about it, and teach other people about it.
At first you don't get anythng, but the guys commenting the sport start giving you lessons of how complicate it is, you say 'another five minutes, so I can see if I understood it or not' .... and then you realize you watched a whole 2-hour-game.
The worst is that by that time, you realize that it is actually a complicated sport, with a lot of strategy.
Try broadcasting chess with a very/ very enthusiastic sports caster, commenting every move as if it were a 1st-person-shooting-game ....... the result might be the same

I see definite potential for curling to make for a spectacular (in the broadest sense of the word) drinking game -- for spectators, that is! Surely, someone must have come up with some rules by now. I would not be surprised to see bars packed during the curling playoffs in 2014, complete with Swiffer promotions.
